Mark Smith Crowned Best Climber by Grade/kg Ratio?
Oct 08, 2009
It’s not common to see anorexic looking climbers sending difficult routes and boulder problems. In fact, difficult climbing tends to favour individuals with lean stick-figure like physiques. But thankfully for the rest of us, Toronto-based climber Mark Smith is crushing this tired stereotype. A recent article on the tick-list tracking website 8a.nu suggests Smith may be one of the world’s best climbers if his top redpoints were modified to reflect his weight. At 93kg (205lbs) Smith is one of the few climbers in this weight range that’s climbed 5.14a and joins other climbing heavyweights like the UK’s now retired 85kg (187lbs) John Dunne and the 88kg (194lbs) Toni Lamprecht in the race for the title of Heavyweight Climbing Champion. More details here and here.
